The Planetary Hierarchy
Direct transmissions from the Tibetan Master Djwhal Khul on the nature, purpose, and ongoing work of the Brotherhood of Light — those who have walked the path before us and now guide humanity's evolution from behind the veil.
The Planetary Hierarchy — also called the Brotherhood of Light or the Elder Brothers of Humanity — is composed of those who have completed the human stage of evolution and triumphed over matter. These are not mythological figures or abstract archetypes. They are real beings who have walked every step of the same path that human beings tread today, undergone every experience, struggled with every difficulty, and ultimately achieved mastery. Their authority rests not on external conferral but on accumulated wisdom earned across millennia of incarnate experience.
"These spiritual personalities, these adepts and Masters, have wrestled and fought for victory and mastery upon the physical plane, and struggled with the miasmas, the fogs, the dangers, the troubles, the sorrows and pains of everyday living. They have trodden every step of the path of suffering, have undergone every experience, have surmounted every difficulty, and have won out... Their apprehension of the freedom that comes through sacrifice of the form by the medium of the purificatory fires, suffices to give Them a firm hand, an ability to persist even when the form may seem to have undergone a sufficiency of suffering, and a love that triumphs over all setbacks, for it is founded on patience and experience."

Djwhal Khul identifies five defining characteristics of these Elder Brothers — each one the direct product of the evolutionary process they have completed:
Not sentimental affection but a love founded on patience and experience — tested across ages of endeavor, failure, and renewed effort — which acts always for the good of the group rather than for individuals.
Not theoretical knowledge but experiential wisdom accumulated across a millennium of lives, working upward from the very bottom of evolution to its present heights.
Courage produced by ages of endeavor, failure, and renewed endeavor — which having led ultimately to triumph, can now be placed entirely at the service of the race.
A purpose that is intelligent, cooperative, and aligned with the group and hierarchical plan — and through it, with the purpose of the Planetary Logos itself.

They are all in physical existence, either in dense physical bodies, such as many of the Masters employ, or in etheric bodies, such as the more exalted helpers of the Lord of the World occupy. It is of value for men to remember that They are in physical existence, and to bear in mind that They exist upon this planet with us, controlling its destinies, guiding its affairs, and leading all its evolutions on to an ultimate perfection."

This is one of the most direct statements in the entire Bailey/DK corpus: the Hierarchy is not a remote spiritual abstraction. Its members are present on this planet in physical or etheric bodies, actively involved in guiding the affairs of Earth and its evolution. They work largely behind the scenes — not because they are unable to act openly, but because the free will of humanity must not be violated. They guide; they impress; they inspire. The degree to which their influence reaches the surface depends on how much humanity opens itself to receive it.
Djwhal Khul identifies four primary functions of the Hierarchy in relation to planetary evolution:
The primary evolutionary goal for the human kingdom — the awakening of individualized, self-aware consciousness capable of recognizing itself as a separate center of experience.
The five kingdoms of nature — mineral, vegetable, animal, human, spiritual — all embody some type of consciousness. The Hierarchy works to develop these to perfection through the adjustment of karma, the agency of force, and the providing of right conditions.
Acting as transmitter to humanity and the deva/angelic kingdom of the will of the Planetary Logos — and through Him, of the Solar Logos. The Hierarchy is a middle station in a chain of transmission reaching from the highest cosmic levels down into incarnate humanity.
Demonstrating by their very existence and demonstrated achievement what human evolution is moving toward — that the path leads somewhere real, and that those who are ahead on it are accessible as teachers and guides.

This single statement defines the entire orientation of Hierarchical work. The Masters do not work with the personality, the form, the outer circumstances of life. They work exclusively with the Soul — the Ego in the causal body, the true identity of the human being that persists across all incarnations. This is why the work of building the Rainbow Bridge and establishing Soul contact is not peripheral to spiritual development — it is the precise point of contact through which Hierarchical assistance can be received and utilized. Without Soul focus, the Masters have nothing to work with in the individual.
For millions of years, while largely invisible to human perception, the Hierarchy has maintained a continuous and specific program of planetary work. Djwhal Khul enumerates seven distinct functions:
The Hierarchy stands between humanity and excessive evil — including cosmic evil emanating from sources beyond the planet itself. This protection extends to all subhuman kingdoms as well. Without this constant intervention, forces far beyond ordinary human comprehension would have overwhelmed planetary evolution long ago.
Constantly working to awaken, expand, and intelligently employ the consciousness aspect in all forms across all kingdoms — a continuous evolutionary pressure applied at every level of planetary life.
The Hierarchy directs world events as far as humanity permits — for free will may not be overridden. They give direction, throw light, impress those in contact with them, and through the inflow of ideas and revelation, influence the tide of human affairs toward the unfolding of consciousness.
The format of cultures and civilizations receives special attention from the Hierarchy — ensuring that the outer forms of human social life provide adequate vehicles for the level of consciousness currently emerging in the human Soul.
The Hierarchy serves as a transformer and transmitter of energies from Shamballa — the planetary center of Will — stepping these down to levels that humanity and the other kingdoms can receive and utilize without being overwhelmed.
The Hierarchy receives and applies the fire that brings to an end outdated cycles, ideologies, organizations, and civilizations when the right time comes — clearing the way for what is better and more adequate to the next stage of emerging consciousness.
Through receiving aspirants into the Ashrams of the Masters, offering disciples opportunity to serve in relation to the emerging Plan, and inaugurating through disciples of each period the new presentations of the training needed for initiation — each major cycle receiving updated forms of the same ancient teaching.
"The Hierarchy is a great fighting body today, fighting for the soul of men, fighting all that blocks the expansion of the human consciousness, fighting all that limits human freedom (I said not license), and fighting to remove those factors and barriers which militate against the return of the Christ and the emergence of the Hierarchy as a fully functioning body on earth. There is nothing weak, vacillating, sentimental or neutral in the attitude of the Hierarchy; this must be grasped by humanity, and the strength and insight as well as the love of the Hierarchy must be counted upon."

This passage corrects a widespread misunderstanding about the nature of spiritual hierarchies — the assumption that evolved beings are passive, detached, or indifferent to the struggles of the world. Djwhal Khul is explicit: the Hierarchy is a fighting body. It fights for the soul of humanity. It fights against everything that blocks consciousness expansion, limits genuine freedom, or delays the emergence of the Christ principle on Earth. There is nothing weak or sentimental in its orientation. Those who align with this work can count on its full strength, insight, and love — not as vague spiritual comfort, but as active, intelligent assistance.
"So many know this truth, and so many people of integrity and worth are co-operating consciously with the Members of the Hierarchy that ecclesiastical antagonisms, and the belittling comments of the concrete minded are of no avail. Men are moving out from under doctrinal authority into direct, personal and spiritual experience; they are coming under the direct authority which contact with Christ and His disciples, the Masters, ever confers."

The Rainbow Bridge work is precisely the technology for establishing this direct contact. The Antahkarana, built strand by strand through the techniques of Phase 1 and Phase 2, is the channel through which Hierarchical impression reaches the individual consciousness — bypassing institutional intermediaries entirely and establishing direct Soul-to-Hierarchy connection.
