The science of calling forth higher energies — and the downpour of divine light that answers every sincere upward reach of the human soul.
Invocation is a petition directed upward — a deliberate act of calling forth support, energy, or power from a higher source. It may take the form of prayer, incantation, concentration, projection, or visualization. The intent behind the act is everything: the energy of genuine, unselfish aspiration behaves fundamentally differently than self-centered desire.
The classic statement of invocation is as simple as "Let love prevail." What appears as a brief utterance is, on inner levels, the launching of a focused thought-form — a directed column of energy that rises from the plane of human feeling and mind toward higher dimensions of reality. Invocation is not wishful thinking. It is a precise energetic mechanism governed by immutable law.

Figure 15 is not merely symbolic art — it is an actual clairvoyant observation of the energetic structure produced by an act of pure devotion. Leadbeater describes this form as a clearly defined thought-form, meaning the maker is one who knows in whom they have believed. The upward determination of the rushing energy reflects both courage and conviction — not vague hope, but the focused force of a soul in genuine contact with its own knowing.
This shape — a sharp upward spire — tells us something important about the mechanics of invocation: it is concentrated, directional, and piercing. The thought-form breaks through into the plane above because only there can it find the dimensional room to expand. In doing so, it does something extraordinary: it holds a door open.
Evocation is what happens next. It is the coming forth of energy or spirit in direct response to the invocation. Figure 17 shows this response — not as something that must be petitioned repeatedly or earned through suffering — but as an always-waiting reality. Leadbeater states it plainly: an infinite flood of higher force is always ready and waiting to pour through any channel that is offered to it, just as water waits to pour through the first pipe that is opened.

The descent from each plane to that of the next below it means an almost paralysing limitation. This is the fundamental dynamic. The higher planes are saturated with divine force. The barrier is not a lack of availability from above — it is the absence of a viable channel from below. The human being is the channel-maker. The act of sincere, unselfish invocation is precisely what opens that channel.
This is where the mechanics become precise. Leadbeater identifies a critical distinction between selfish and unselfish energy:
Energy moves in a closed curve — it loops back and expends itself on its own level. Nothing higher is contacted. The energy circulates within the lower planes and returns to the sender unchanged.
Energy rushes forth in an open curve — it does not return in the ordinary sense. Instead it pierces upward through the dimensional boundary and opens a channel through which higher-plane force can descend.
This is not metaphor — it is a description of how energy actually behaves at the level of thought-form mechanics. The selfless intention creates a geometrically open trajectory. That opening is not arbitrary: its diameter corresponds to the quality and magnitude of the thought or feeling that made it. A grand, sincere, knowledge-rooted act of devotion opens a proportionally grand channel.
When divine life descends through the opened channel, the results operate on two levels simultaneously. For the individual who made the channel: a very great strengthening and uplifting — an influx of higher-plane force that reorganizes the subtle bodies and elevates the energetic baseline. For the environment: a spreading, powerful, beneficent influence that extends in all directions from the point of channel opening.
What has historically been called "an answer to prayer" or attributed to special divine intervention is, in this understanding, the completely predictable result of a great and immutable law — not a miraculous exception, but the reliable operation of a universal principle. Open the channel. The response is automatic.
The process described by Leadbeater is precisely what occurs when the Soul Invocation is sounded with genuine aspiration. The projection of focused energy upward creates the channel. That channel is then filled — automatically, by law — with light and spiritual energies from the higher planes. The Soul Invocation is not a prayer asking for something that may or may not come. It is a precision instrument for opening a dimensional channel and receiving the downpour that has always been waiting to flow through it.
The invocation-evocation dynamic is identified as the primary method of communicating with Deity and higher forces during the Aquarian Age now unfolding. This is a movement from blind faith and petition-based prayer toward a conscious, participatory, scientific approach to the divine. The practitioner understands the law, works deliberately within it, and expects — not hopes for — a response proportional to the quality of the channel opened.
This shifts the relationship between the human being and the higher planes from supplication to co-creation. The energy of the higher planes is not withheld pending worthiness — it is waiting, inexhaustibly, for any sincere upward reach that creates the pipe through which it can flow. The work is entirely in the opening.
